Week 5

Monday, October 5

  • Free Write:
    • In “Prey” how does Matheson generate suspense using:
      • Character
      • Setting
      • Descriptive language
      • Vivd Verbs
    • What fears did you find?

* In “Witch Wars” how does Matheson use setting and character to exploit the reader’s fears?

  • Discuss your responses with a partner and then we will discuss as a group.
  • Vocab packets — discussed review procedure this coming Thursday and holistic grading.
  • 2 sentence horror stories!
    • Read through the example on the power point and then work with a partner to write your own. When you have a story you feel is sufficiently creepy, write it out with color and decoration on a clean sheet of copy paper. We will decorate the board with these (and take down our 6-word memoirs).
  • With the time that is left, read tomorrow's assignment: pages 13-33 of I Am Legend. There is likely to be a quiz. Fair warning.

Tuesday, October 6

  • Free Write:

On page 32 of I Am Legend, Matheson writes:
“But are his needs any more shocking than the needs of other animals and men? Are his deeds more outrageous than the deeds of the parent who drained the spirit from his child? The vampire may foster quickened heartbeats and levitated hair. But is he worse than the parent who gave to society a neurotic child who became a politician? Is he worse than the manufacturer who set up belated foundations with the money he made by handing bombs and guns to suicidal nationalists? …is the vampire so bad?

  • Respond to the quote. Do you agree? Disagree?
  • Why is the vampire so bad?
  • Is Neville’s reasoning sound or faulty?
  • Why do we fear one, but not the others?
  • Quiz #1 on I Am Legend
  • Discussion Questions:
    • What hints do we have that show Neville may be losing his grip on sanity?
    • What hints do we get that Neville feels quilty for killing the vampires in their sleep?
    • In your group, come up with one good, open-ended, higher-level question to pose to the class.
  • Work time for vocab packets and reading… for tomorrow: read pages 34-47 in I Am Legend, write two double-entry journal entries on the reading so far and 2 open-ended, higher level questions for discussion.

Wednesday, October 7

  • Free Write: Find 2 objects in the chapters we have read so far that you believe symbolize something greater. What is the author trying to symbolize in his choice of objects?
    • OR: what would it do to you if you were the LAST person on earth? How long would you make it?
  • Student-led discussion on Book 1 of I Am Legend
  • Time to read and work on Vocab 3.

For tomorrow: read pages 49-68 of I Am Legend and write 2 double-entry journal entries and 2 open-ended discussion questions. I will be collecting these at the end of this unit.

Vocab packet 3 is due on Friday. Vocab test 3 is also on Friday.

Thursday, October 8

  • Free Write: At the beginning of Book 2 we finally get some more information about Neville’s past. We also get some clues about what might have caused the current conditions on earth.
    • Make a list of those clues.
    • What do you think might have happened to cause the vampire ‘plague’?
    • Why do you think that?
  • As a class, review Vocab lesson 3
  • In small groups, choose one of your questions to answer. (remember those 2 open-ended questions you were supposed to have written for today?)
    • As a group, write one solid Quote Sandwich paragraph to answer it. We will present these to the class and hand them in tomorrow.
  • For tomorrow: read chapter 9: pages 68-77 and write one double-entry journal entry.
  • Vocab packet 3 due tomorrow!
  • Vocab test 3 tomorrow!

Friday, October 9

  • Vocab packet 3 due
  • Vocab 3 test
  • Free Write:
    • Contrast Neville’s reaction to the death of Virginia to his reaction to the death of Kathy. Why might he feel and behave differently?
    • Virginia is the first in the family to fall ill and yet Kathy dies before her. What does this suggest about the pathology of the illness?
  • Groups present Quote Sandwich paragraph to class
  • Discussion of chapter 9
  • For Monday read chapters 10-13 (pages 77-110) and write one double entry journal entry and one open-ended discussion question. There is likely to be a quiz.
