Interior Design Essay

The Importance of Interior Design

Most people think interior design is just a person decorating a house. That it's easy and you don't need to put that much work or effort into it. This is what I thought at first too, but then I decided that I might want to be and Interior Designer later in life. As I was looking through the process and work ethic I realized that there is a lot to know about interior design. Yet I still want to know, what are the special details that make Interior Design so important? The importance of Color, Decorative Accessories, and the Arrangement and Balance of Furniture. These are the little things that make Interior Design so special.

Colors

  • When you have wall art or other hanging masterpieces, it has a color or design. Color is a very important assessment when it comes to interior design. Color can change the mood and effect on or in your house. If you have a roomy house but not that much money to fill it, it's okay. You can make your decor or furniture fill in the space when using the right shading and colors. When you use warm bright colors like yellow and light pink, it can increase the size of the object or room. When you use cool colors like blue and purple, this will do the opposite and can decrease the size of the object or room. Both of the cool and warm colors will attract the same values when appearing on a contrasting ground. Contours and Outlines are emphasized by contrast rather than by any inherent characteristics of color. The picture to the far right has a woodsy theme. You can see by picking the right shades and colors they were able to capture their theme very well. Most people usually skip over these details and pay no attention. From the following above we are able to see the importance of color and what a big impact it can have on the mood and size of your room. (p. 16-18) (Fabrics, Fashion, Architecture)

Decorative Accessories

  • There are many different types of styles of accessory options one can have in their home. It could be vintage, themed, feminine, masculine, the list could go on and on.

Accessories and Decorations can include…

  • Rugs
  • Hanging art/Posters
  • Plants
  • Table Pieces
  • When picking decor and accessories you have to make sure all of the decor matches with others in the room you are decorating. You can have different themes and styles in each room if you want. For each room and each style, you have to color coordinate and work with the the different sizes. If you pick your theme for a room and the theme was modern summer, your colors would most likely be using light and cheery colors like yellow. The worst thing to do is to have the same color but with different shades. If you pick a color make sure that they are all the same shade. When hanging decor, it has the same concept with placing furniture, you have to make sure it will fit in a certain spot and it isn't over powering the room. Over powering and suffocating a room can be really easy to do if you rush to slap all the decor on. You must make sure to distribute your decor evenly on each wall so it looks neat and nice. A lot of people don't even think of this step, most people just go to the store and buy whatever they think is pretty. This shows another way that Interior Design takes effort, work, and planning.

The first picture above is the perfect example for explaining my reasoning. This room shows color coding, spacing, and decor placement. Unlike the second photo showing what you shouldn't do. This picture gives you an example of suffocation and overpowering a room.

The Arrangement and Balance of Furniture

  • Everyone has to have furniture, but before buying furniture you have to make sure you plan out where to place it. And also making sure it will fit in a spot. The best way of planning, is to measure to space of where the furniture is planned to go is going to be placed and how big the furniture will be. Also make sure to not have your furniture suffocating the whole room. If you do get a big couch or other type of furniture make sure you have a big enough room to put it in. You will also need to keep in mind the different shades according to the lighting. When you have two pieces of furniture and one of them is a lighter shade than the other, slide the lighter one closer to the wall making the color seem a darker shade. This will make both pieces match each other. If you only have one big window with dark color walls the best choice for a style of furniture is for it to be light colored because a dark colored piece of furniture in a dark room will only make the room look smaller and also more creepy. Pay attention the the type of fabric, leather will shine when light reflects to it. It also gets hot and sticky in the summer. (An Introduction to Architectural Interiors)

The pictures above can give you an idea of what not to do and what you should do. The first image on the far left is the example of a crowed room and suffocating room. As you can see these people did not plan out the spacing, placing arrangement and matching. The picture in the middle shows the emptiness, where there is not enough furniture. The last picture shows everything that I mentioned in my paragraphs. This picture shows arranged placement, furniture balance and color matching.

Cool Factoid

  • Studies show that Interior design could have started from as long ago as the Egyptian era. There have been Photos of the tomb artifacts and drawings on the wall. There was also findings of ancient Greek vase paintings and paintings on the walls and ceilings found in the Roman cities of Pompeii. Though in the Renascence there was more sightings of interior design and paintings than others. (Interior Design Fashion Artical)

As we can see from the research above, you are able to understand all the work put into Interior Design. You can see all the little details that most people skip and or underestimate. All of these details, even the littlest ones are the reasons that make Interior Design important. With color, there's a lot more than just picking a color swatch from the store. It can be easy to mess up if you don't plan it all out and take in counter of how it will effect your room. With Designs and Decor, this is another thing people think they can just skip over and wing it. From the information above, you will notice how important decorating really is. You will also have to take in account of the sizes, color, and design. Arrangement and Balance of Furniture is one of the most important step in Interior Design. By the simplest of putting your furniture in one spot can effect your whole room in a lot of different ways. All of the previous Information proves my point why Interior Design is so important.
