Ask your self about depression what do you know? Have you ever had it? What does it effect? Who does it effect? Focusing on target symptoms could be helpful to someone with depression (Beck et al. 270). Target symptoms are often used to diagnose depression. MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) is said to be the most common form of clinical depression (Bieling et al. 2). There are many different symptoms of MDD some of which are Low Mood and Feeling Tired (Bieling et al. 2). There are unlimited lists upon lists of treatments for depression including counseling, and medication. Treating may be hard but in with the right help you can over come it. So what is Depression ? What is it and who does it effect?
The therapist needs to discuss the patients goals with them in order to reach which target problem to aim at and what methods to use (Beck et al. 270). The cognitive therapist then formulates the patients problems in terms of the thoughts and images underlying the patients responses. There is more then just one target symptoms to look at. There is sadness, induced anger, and anxiety are just a few of them (Beck et al. 270). There are special ways and treatments meant for each symptom. A treatment for induced anger is to give the patient a reason to get angry and then focus on them calming themselves down and forgetting about the problem. Apart from the three target symptoms I listed above there are many, many more.
MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) is the most common form of clinical depression. MDD is a condition associated with periods of severe depression lasting about two weeks almost everyday (Bieling et al. 2). When untreated the average episode of MDD can last up to 4 months or longer (Bieling et al. 2). About five to ten percent of individuals with MDD experience severe depression chronically for at least two years, without a significant break (Bieling et al. 2). For a patient to be diagnosed with MDD you have to have at least one of the core symptoms ether low mood or lost of interest in some or all of his/her usual activities (Bieling et al. 2). In addition to these two core features you have to have at least four of these additional symptoms increases or decreases in appetite or weight changes in sleep (ether insomnia or sleeping too much) changes in physical activity (moving very slow or becoming physically agitated or fidgety) feeling tired feeling worthless or excessively guilty difficulty concentrating or making decisions recurrent thoughts of death or suicide (Bieling et al. 2).
There are many target symptoms. As stated above there are certain target symptoms and ways to treat that certain symptom (Beck et al. 270). Sadness is a common target symptom. Self sympathy procedures are particularly helpful to who want to cry but are not able to (Beck et al. 272). Traditionally men in our society have trouble crying but as sex roles change we are finding more and more females with this problem (Beck et al. 272). Anxiety patients often report some type of anxiety as a problem that accompanies their depression or a problem as their depression lifts (Beck et al. 278). Some patients are excessively disturbed by the symptoms of anxiety because they do not label this emotion correctly (Beck et al. 278).
Focusing on their target symptoms may be a helpful way to treat their depression. As stated above the therapist will discuss their symptoms with them and from there will decide on what symptom to aim at and how. MDD is the most common form of clinical depression. Despite all the symptoms and having to have a certain amount of each symptom MDD still seems to be the most common. Look at all of the target symptoms they might help to find the way to help treat their depression. As we look at all the different facts found here in this paper you can get a deeper look into depression.
